We are one of the UK's top grammar schools. As a state school, education is free for all pupils. We are a successful state boarding school, rated as 'outstanding' for boarding by Ofsted. Boarding costs only about a third of the fees payable at independent schools. For these reasons, we believe we are an outstanding alternative to the independent sector. We are virtually unique in the state sector; selective and ambitious; day and boarding; a broad
academic curriculum (from computing to ancient Greek); and prizing extra-curricular opportunity and excellence for every pupil.
There are 1260 pupils at the school, including 125 boarders and a thriving Sixth Form of 400 students. We challenge the brightest pupils in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to fulfil their potential. Our Sixth Form is coeducational, and we now welcome Sixth Form girls as boarders as well as in day school.
Some of our pupils have led extraordinary lives. Christopher Urswick was Henry II’s chaplain and ambassador and had a speaking part in a Shakespeare play. Dr William Whewell was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge and coined the word “scientist”, while Sir Richard Owen founded the Natural History Museum and invented the word “dinosaur”. The values central to LRGS are those of academic and extra-curricular excellence and opportunity, within a diverse and tolerant community: these form the best possible foundation for future life.
“The boarding experience has a profound positive impact on the lives of children”. Ofsted
